The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Curriculum

Our Physical Education Lead is Mr Mason

Intent

Here, at St John Southworth Primary School, we recognise the value of Physical Education (P.E). We fully hold on to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

Implementation

P.E. is taught at St John Southworth Primary School as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas. It is taught at a minimum of one PE session a week, and two sessions per week wherever possible. We teach lessons so that children:

  • Have fun and experience success in sport
  • Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development
  • Secure and build on a range of skills
  • Develop good sporting attitudes
  • Understand basic rules
  • Experience positive competition
  • Learn in a safe environment
  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.

Impact

P.E is taught as a basis for children learning lifelong skills, where they have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that, if taught well, the children are allowed to succeed. It is then that they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At St John Southworth, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Please meet our school 'Sports Ambassadors'

Dylan, Scarlett, Rayyan Ali, Zainib and Haakim.

Our Sports Ambassadors play a vital role in promoting teamwork, fair play and a love of being active across our school. They help organise equipment, support teachers during PE lessons and lead games on the playground to ensure everyone feels included and confident to join in. Acting as positive role models, they encourage healthy lifestyles, celebrate effort as well as achievement and listen to pupils’ ideas about sport and physical activity. Through their enthusiasm and leadership, our Sports Ambassadors help make our school a happy, active and supportive community for all

After school football - Y5 and Y6 boys and girls

Our after-school football clubs for boys and girls offer a fun, inclusive and energetic way for pupils to build their skills and confidence on the pitch. The sessions focus on teamwork, communication and developing core football techniques through exciting drills and then putting them into action in festivals organised by the Pendle Sports Partnership. Children of all abilities are encouraged to take part, make new friends and enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity in a supportive environment. Our football clubs aim to inspire a love of sport, promote healthy lifestyles and provide every child with the opportunity to shine.
